Stick War: Legacy Best Skins & Upgrades Guide — What to Buy First

I wasted 2,000 gems on the wrong skins when I started. It hurt. I bought what looked cool instead of what worked, and my army paid for it for weeks. Lesson learned the hard way.

Here's what I wish someone told me on day one. In Stick War Legacy, skins change how a unit fights. They are not costumes. The right skin on the right unit can carry a Campaign level or a long Endless Deads night. The wrong one just burns gems. And gems take forever to earn.

This guide ranks the best Stick War Legacy skins. It matches each one to its unit. And it gives you a buying order that wastes nothing. New to the game? Start with our Beginner's Guide first, then come back here before you spend a single gem.

Which Stick War Legacy skins are actually worth your gems?

Here's the honest breakdown. No fluff.

SkinMain perkBest forWatch out for
Leaf-50% build time, -10% cost, faster movement/controlMiners, early rushesLow defence in long fights
IceSlows every enemy action. Direct-control can briefly freezeArchidons, Magikill, GiantsLess value vs ranged enemies
SavageFaster attacks, stun immunity, double damage vs DeadsSwordwrath, Giants, Endless DeadsWeaker defence vs archers
LavaBurn damage + reflects part of incoming damageSpeartons, Giants (front-line tanks)Expensive, slower push
VampLife-steal, poison immunity, extra health, hits multiple enemiesSpeartons, Giants, long fights/bossesMost expensive set
UndeadKilled units return as DeadsSwarming / pressure buildsRevived units are weaker than the original
VoltaicExtra health + electric discharge that can chain to nearby enemiesSwordwrath, ArchidonsBest in packed fights, wasted on lone duels

Skins get expensive fast. From the in-game shop, expect around 500 gems per unit for Ice. A Savage Giant runs about 1,000. Lava sits near 1,500. A Vamp Archer can hit 3,000. Giants cost more because they hit harder and eat more army space. Brutal, right?

My hot take? Most players overbuy. You need three skins to win. Everything else is luxury. That's why buying order matters more than the skins themselves.

What is the best skin for each unit?

Miner: Leaf, always first

I will die on this hill. Leaf Miner is the best first purchase in the game. No contest.

No other skin improves mining. Leaf cuts build time in half and shaves 10% off costs. You reach a full Miner line faster and cheaper. Your whole economy speeds up from the first minute. Faster economy. Bigger army. Sooner wins.

If you buy one early skin, make it this one. I bought mine on day two and never looked back.

Swordwrath: Leaf early, Voltaic / Savage later

Early on, Leaf Swordwrath are your cheapest emergency defence. They also harass enemy Miners better than anything at that price. Cheap, fast, annoying. Perfect.

Later, switch gears. Voltaic adds chain lightning that shreds packed fights. Savage adds attack speed for messy melee clashes. Pick Voltaic against crowds. Pick Savage against Deads. Wrong pick here hurts. A lot.

Archidon: Ice first, Vamp for long runs

Ice Archidons are the best value in the game after Leaf Miner. They slow charging melee before it touches your line. Every slowed second is free arrow damage.

Vamp Archidons life-steal through long fights, but they cost far more. Buy Ice first. Thank me later.

Spearton: Vamp for survival, Lava for damage reflect

Your shield wall has one job. Stay alive.

Vamp Speartons life-steal through swarms and ignore poison completely. Lava Speartons punish attackers with burn and reflected damage. Pair Lava Speartons with a Giant and the earthquake stun turns your front line into a meat grinder. Beautiful. Violent. Effective.

I run Vamp for Endless Deads and Lava for Campaign pushes. Both work. Pick the one that matches your mode.

Magikill: Ice

Ice Magikill is simple. He already hits groups with area damage. Ice slows those groups too. Slow plus splash. What's not to like?

Keep him behind your Speartons. No skin turns him into a melee unit, so stop trying.

Giant: Savage, Lava, or Vamp (pick by mode)

Giants are your biggest investment, so match the skin to the mode.

  • Savage Giant: attack speed + anti-Dead damage. It's the Endless Deads king.
  • Lava Giant: burn + reflect while tanking a statue push.
  • Vamp Giant: life-steal for boss fights and very long battles.

One Giant, one job. Don't mix and match.

How should you spend gems without wasting them?

Every gem has an opportunity cost. Gems buy three things: skins, shop spells and boosts, and chests. Each skin you buy is a spell you did not buy.

  1. First: Leaf Miner (economy wins every mode)
  2. Second: Ice Archidon (crowd control for Campaign + defence)
  3. Third: Your main frontline skin: Vamp or Lava Spearton
  4. Last: Expensive Vamp/Lava Giant sets

Keep one economy spell and one damage spell in reserve. Emergencies happen. Don't spend your last gem on a skin. You will regret it.

How do you earn gems for free?

You don't need to pay. You need patience.

  • Rewarded ads: small payout each time, slow but free and steady.
  • Endless Deads farming: clearing a night pays roughly 10 gems plus a star. Many players farm the first 10 nights repeatedly instead of chasing records. Boring? A little. Reliable? Absolutely.
  • Chests: open them from the menu between missions. Set one opening when you finish playing. They never expire once finished.
  • Campaign/Tournament progress: finish levels and earn difficulty Crowns first. Gem packs are optional. Nothing in them is required to beat the Campaign.

Which skins work best at each stage of the game?

As you level up, your priorities shift. Your skins should shift with them.

  • Early game: Leaf everywhere you can. Rush Miners and Swordwrath. Win the gold race.
  • Mid game: Ice for control, Savage for aggression vs Deads.
  • Late game / Insane: Vamp frontline + Lava Giant. Undead skins for swarm pressure when you can afford losses.

FAQ

There's no single winner among Stick War Legacy skins. It depends on the unit. Leaf Miner is the best value purchase in the game. Ice Archidon is the best crowd control. Vamp Spearton is the best frontline survivor. Match the skin to the job.

Leaf Miner. Always. It boosts your entire economy, which makes every future purchase easier. Nothing else comes close for a first buy. Not even close.

Late game, yes. Early game, no. Vamp sets are the most expensive in the shop. Buy them after your economy skins (Leaf Miner, Ice Archidon) are done. Rushing Vamp first is the classic beginner trap. Don't be that player.

No. The mod version unlocks every skin from the start, so this whole buying order becomes optional. If you play the official game, though, the order above saves you thousands of gems. Literally thousands.

Which Stick War Legacy skins should you buy first?

Buy Leaf Miner first. Buy Ice Archidon second. Then invest in one frontline set, Vamp or Lava Spearton, before any Giant skin. That order helps in every mode and wastes the fewest gems.

That's the whole strategy. Three smart purchases beat ten random ones.
